Wax Carving and Casting - August 23-24
Wax Carving and Casting - August 23-24
In this two-day workshop, you will take a jewelry design idea (or tiny sculpture!) from wax block to molten metal to finished project. You will learn the basics of wax carving, how to prepare your piece for casting, the process of investing, and then melting and casting metal. One fun thing about the process of wax carving is that it allows for more organic forms and textures. Students will leave with one or two finished items such as a ring, pendant, or small object.
No metalsmithing experience is necessary, but can be helpful.

The workshop was so so good! The space was beautiful, functional and comfortable. The pace of the class was perfect, I learned a lot and had plenty of time to sink in to the project. I left feeling inspired and motivated.
I just finished this weekend lost wax course and it was a blast! Tavia is incredibly generous with both her time and her extensive knowledge - she’ll spend as long as you need explaining techniques and troubleshooting, no matter what your skill level is. She makes what seems like a complex process feel totally doable.
This class works whether you’re a complete beginner or have metalworking or casting experience already. It’s also the kind of course you could take multiple times and get something new out of each experience as your skills develop.
The fact that there is lost wax and cuttlefish bone casting gives you a nice range to work with. Tavia makes it feel like you’re just learning from a super talented friend rather than sitting in some formal class.
I came away with pieces I’m genuinely excited to show off, add to my portfolio, and the confidence to keep creating on my own. If you’re thinking about trying something hands-on and creative, this is it. Malleable is such a great part of Charlottesville.
The casting and carving class was great. It allows people to participate in two different forms of casting. The wax carving and investment casting process allows people to see and used special equipment that would normally not be procured by beginners.
The cuttlebone casting is another method that is reachable for beginners. I loved this class so much. Tavia is a wonderful teacher & she directed us and encouraged us to do the art we wanted.
